Socialism
An Essay by Justin D. Lowry

Socialism commonly refers to an economic system advocating state or collective ownership. Modern Socialism stems from the writing and philosophy of Karl Marx. In theory, it may seem like a good practice, take from the rich to give to the poor, just like Robin Hood. What people fail to realize is what this practice cost.

In order for this system to work, the government puts a higher tax rate on corporations and the wealthy. Most people view this as "fair". Why should they have money when I don't? People fail to realize that having wealth is not a God given or Constitutional right...yet

When you place this higher tax rate on these corporations, they pass this tax on to the consumer i.e., costs more to produce goods, cost more to buy the goods. Not to mention that is stifles the ability of these corporations to create new jobs. Which in case hurts the middle class as cost of living and unemployment goes up.

Then you look at the recipients of this welfare. Michael D. Turner once said, "If the history of welfare teaches us anything, it teaches us that government money is addictive as any narcotic." These people lose the incentive to work as well as the desire to better themselves, kind of like the old fable of "Give a man a fish, he'll eat a meal. Teach him to fish, he'll eat for his life." It seems almost as if the liberal politicians do not believe people can work and better themselves at all.

Let us say that you are born to a poor family. You work your fingers to the bone, study hard in school, and work your way through college. You graduate and get a decent paying job. Work a few years, then decide that you can do what your company does better and cheaper. A small company is founded and after a few years, you start to reap your rewards. Then ...then, you enter into "the" tax bracket. All of your hard work seems as for nothing. It seems like you are being punished for your success. If you read what liberals say about successful people, you hear many words brought up, especially "greedy", "corrupt", and "lucky". It seems as if hard work means nothing to them. It seems as if you have to be "lucky", "greedy", and/or "corrupt" to succeed in this country. Do not get me wrong, there are a few bad apples out there, but don't throw the whole barrel away for a few.

Then, they bring up things as "deregulation". In socialism, the government controls every aspect of the economy. Let us face facts; the federal government does not have a great tract record for controlling things. If the federal government took control of the Sahara desert, it would have a shortage of sand in a few years.

Remember, the thing is that equality does not mean an equal salary, but instead an equal opportunity. Opportunity is what America the country that it is, and capitalism gave Americans that opportunity. There is no law in this land to keep someone from obtaining the opportunity to become what you want to become. It takes hard work, patience, and maybe even a little sucking up from time to time. Napoleon Hill once said, "If the human mind can think it, the human body can achieve it." That is a very true statement.
