Purpose of Guns
An Essay by Justin D. Lowry
When the discussion arises of the Second Amendment, the discussion turns to safety. Gun safety is a great issue and concern, but that issue should be placed upon the parents and gun user. The government should not have the right to ever tell the parents how to raise and what to teach their children. Guns should not be banned, instead have increased responsibility to teach their children.
Crime is another argument against guns. The way prohibition did not stop the consumption of alcohol; banning guns will not stop crimes. You would have a society of unarmed citizens, and criminals who are armed illegally. You would be sending the sheep to the wolves. Most criminals do not even buy guns legally now, so the government should crack down on the illegal sale and transportation of guns to stop crime.
What so many people fail to realize is that the true purpose of the second amendment is not only to protect the home against criminals, but to also defend the people from the government. Maybe they do realize this, and thus they push to ban the guns. Are they ignorant to this point, or do they acknowledge this and want to ban them because of this?
As long as we the people are armed, we are the governments "Sword of Damocles". Consider the oppressive governments, one of the first things they do is ban guns. The people, with out guns, become the sheep, instead of the shepherd. Tolerance of oppression has no choice but to increase.
My final point is, in the State of Georgia, the Bill of Rights guarantees your right to own guns. Therefore, to ban guns nationally, you would not only break the Second Amendment, but also the Tenth Amendment. You just have to ask yourself, do you want to be the sheep, or the shepherd?
